"The lesson is clear. Each of us is his brother’s keeper. In the face of massive violations of human rights and humanitarian law, whether in Sudan, Rwanda or elsewhere, the world cannot be silent. Even if there is little stomach for action among those who could make a difference; even if what we say might expose their indifference; we still have a duty to speak out. We all have an obligation to be more than passive bystanders, to get involved, to hold leaders accountable, and indeed to carry out the mission enshrined in your own committee’s name: to rescue those who need rescue."
Remarks by Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the International Rescue Committee Freedom Award dinner honouring General Romeo Dallaire in New York, on 10 November 2004.

I read this in a transcript, and couldn't agree more. This was so perfectly articulated it should be a Hallmark card.

That is so completely true. I helped an older lady put her 3 huge bags of trash in the dumpster the other day and she was so surprised that a stranger would stop and help her out when I could have simply kept walking. Its so sad how people just look away when something doesn't doesn't seem to concern them. Just wait until you need help, who will be there willing to help?

I think helping some old bag throw her garbage out and invading countries are two different things.
It's like just the other day I told this old lady to fuck off, cause I knew I could whip her. Just like if I were pres, I'd tell Iran to fuck off, 'cause we got the bombs. Wait . . . . you're right! It's exactly the same!

see and that is why it is so surprising for people when someone actually helps out b/c today everyone is so selfish. most people think, "as long as i'm not gettting hurt or it doesn't concern me than there is no point to help out." wrong. we need to stop being lazy and stand up and help out, whether it is the old lady at the dumpster or a poor country that has fallen under the rule of an evil leader. if we start by helping out in our own homes with even our family than it will be passed on through out the comunity, than the state, than the nation, than the world. it all starts with how you treat your family, friends, neighbors, and even enemies. if we just stand by and watch than what happened in Germany before WWII will happen all over again.
