Just someone who originally grew up in Nazi Bavaria, was a member of Hitler Youth and the Nazi Army before deserting and put in a POW camp by the Allies anyhow, and is considered about the most conservative Catholic in the world.

Every kid under Nazi rule was "inducted" into the Hitler Youth upon the age of 16, at that point the war was going badly, and Hitler needed all the help he could get. He was yoinked out of the semenary where he was studying to be a priest to serve in the army, and like Rchif0 said, he deserted. Ratzinger's father was ardently against the third reich.

One of the great things about being here in the US, the only things you have to do are pay taxes and die.
