COM 115 in summer

Post by kevin_100 »

I'm going to be taking COM 115 in the summer. Not in Springfield, but West Plains, MO. Anyway, I was wanting to know is the number of speeches that a student has to do less in the summer since it is only a 8 week course.

I'm hoping no more than 4 speeches, but I'm probably way off.

The COM 115 class meets two times a week, three hours per day for 8 weeks.

I'm taking the class with an instructor called Trotter and supposely, she is the one you want to take it with. There is another instructor that teaches it. Her last name is Garret. I don't know what her first name is.

I was wanting to hear what others had to say about taking COM 115 in the summer.

My main reason for taking it in the summer is because I want to get it over with.

Anyway, if anyone could post some stuff about the summer class I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks!

COM 115 wasn't too bad

Post by kevin_100 »

Since no one experienced the summer com 115 course. I thought I would share my experience from it.

We had to do five speeches. The first speech was an informative speech about yourself. Basically, just get up in front of the class and tell something about yourself. She made us pick a children story for our second speech. We had to re-tell the story to the class. Couldn't just read the story, however, we could use note cards. In the third speech was our first informative speech that we had to find a topic and research it and present it to the class. The fourth speech was the same type of speech but we had to find another topic and research it and present it to the class. Finally, the last one which is a persuasive speech which is like an informative speech but it has to change a persons way of thinking.

Overall this class wasn't bad. Taking it in the summer and at West Plains, MO and with Trotter really helped me get through this class.

I'm not much of a speaker, but I manage to get through this course. I do not like telling people something that I found out, because it makes it appear that I'm pretending that they don't understand what I'm talking about, which I'm sure they do.

We also had to make power point presentations to go along with our speeches. She said, in today's world, people need to be entertained and power point was the entertainment part that we had to give our audience when we gave a speech.

Anyway, I thought I would let people know how the course was so they can better determine what they would like to do. Either take it in the fall/spring or take it in the summer. If you have the time, the summer route is a lot better because it is only 8 weeks so the class is over before you know it. But the bad thing about the class is, the time flys by so fast that their isn't much time to prepare for the speech that you plan to give.

Oh yeah, one more thing, about all the speeches was 6-8 minutes long, except for the very first speech which was 2 minutes long. After going through this course, 2 minutes isn't anything. If you do some descent researching on your topic, you can talk easily for 5 minutes. My guess, you will go over on your time limit on the first speech and maybe the second speech. You'll learn how long or short 5 minutes is. It doesn't take too much talking before your time is up.

My roommate last semester took COM 115 and he had to do four speeches. Don't know the instructor he had. But his outlines for his speeches were more intense than mine had to be. His were seven pages long and mine were only a little over three and a half. Plus he had to do a final, and because of the time issue in the summer, it is hard to do a written comprehensive final.

If you have any questions about COM 115, ask away. Hopefully, I can answer questions regarding speech making or regarding the course.

Fall is approaching pretty fast. I guess it is time to dish out some green and buy those required expensive textbooks.

Later all,

Kevin
